On Saturday, November 12, 2011, a huge crowd showed up to support the service of our military troops and our Veterans, by coming to see the wonderful parade held in their honor in Blue Island.
The Blue Island Bicycle Club was honored to ride in this event.
Genevieve Healy gets ready for the parade while her dad, Army veteran Mike Healy looks on to the other parade activities. Angel Fernandez, Samantha Esparza, Vianca Barcena, Mike Healy, Vianncé Barcena in rear ground; Cornelius Jones in the foreground.
We had about 20 kids show up for the ride. We spent over an hour decorating bikes (and sometimes each other!). The children tried to wear patriotic colors for the day as well. In addition to the kids, we have two adult members of the bike club who are Veterans. Both Gerry Dagenais and Michael Healy rode in the parade with us.

Cornelius Jones is front and center here, with Julissa Gaytan in front, followed by Mike Healy and Angel Fernandez.
The parade moved down Western Avenue until it turned West (I think on York Street, but I can't remember), eventually ending at Memorial Park. There was a tremendous amount of activity at the park as many of the military vehicles (both modern and vintage) were on display. Best yet, there was a fantastic World War II Swiss Army Bike! The owner bought it several years ago on eBay, and he now routinely rides it in parades and the like. It was neat!
Just like a Swiss Army knife, the whole bike folds for compact travel!
What a beautiful crank, eh?
